COLLABORATION
Swiss luxury mechanical watch brand FRANCK MULLER and Square Enix are proud to announce our first-ever collaboration.
As part of this collaboration, FRANCK MULLER will release four limited-edition watches from the Vanguard collection, a series born from the brand’s concept of innovation, which encapsulates the enchanting world of FINAL FANTASY XVI. These watches will be available at official FRANCK MULLER shops within 2025. Details about the sales method will be announced later on the official website of FRANCK MULLER and the official FINAL FANTASY XVI social media accounts.
INSPIRATION
The origin of this collaboration can be described as a miraculous meeting between two companies, each striving to deliver the joy of liberation through their storytelling, despite coming from different worlds.
Kazuya Takahashi, the character designer for FINAL FANTASY XVI, was inspired by FRANCK MULLER's watches to create new designs. FRANCK MULLER, aligning with the grand narrative of dreams, has fused these designs with the mechanism of the Vanguard collection.
VANGUARD
“Pioneers of New Time”
The "Vanguard" is a watch created by FRANCK MULLER Watchland with the theme of "avant-garde," combining the pinnacle of technical craftsmanship. Its design is inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1920s and 1930s, specifically "Streamline Moderne," pursuing the beauty woven from straight and curved lines to the highest level. The bold form, where hard metallic sheen and velvety smoothness harmonize, exudes a presence beyond mere industrial design.
The "Vanguard" also embodies FRANCK MULLER's cherished "philosophy of time." Life, much like navigating a vast ocean, offers no clear markers. For this reason, when wearing time, one should feel the freedom to go anywhere and prioritize one’s own will. The "Vanguard" implies the compass of life with that message.
FRANCK MULLER, who has continually proposed new ways of perceiving time, hopes that through the "Vanguard," people will become "pioneers of time," living by their own values and perspectives.

White has long been a signature for the FINAL FANTASY series, so it was without question that for this unique model, I would use it as a starting point.
Once a foundation had been established, I next combined three of the game’s central figures—Ifrit (representing fire), the Phoenix (representing protection and rebirth), and Bahamut (representing strength), using as inspiration a memorable scene in which Bahamut carries his two companions off to the epic final battle.
Adjacent to the tourbillon, which I envisioned as the moon over Valisthea, I added the bright red custrel star Metia before finally incorporating fiery crimson accents to complete the design.

While brainstorming ideas for this watch, I quickly realized that the Vanguard’s elongated face was perfect for expressing myself artistically, allowing me the freedom to incorporate a bold design.
Ultimately, I settled on a combination of the protagonist Clive’s Eikon Ifrit—with his quintessential flames and unmistakable horns—and the “Oath”—the symbol of Clive’s rebel organization, depicting two daggers piercing a single crystal. To further bring out Clive’s character, beneath these, I added the hilt of his sword, Invictus.

The symbol emblazoned on the watch face is representative of an egg of the firebird Phoenix, and one of the traditional emblems of the Grand Duchy of Rosaria—Joshua’s home. The brilliant red used in the strap not only signifies this proud nation, but also its crown prince and his majestic Eikon.

I started with the official heraldic charge for Dion’s Holy Knights Dragoon—the outspread wings of the dreadwyrm Bahamut. Placing a detailed profile of the Eikon atop this emblem gives it the appearance that Bahamut is preparing for flight.
Above the wings, I added the silhouette of a “wyvern tail”—a flower which plays a central role in Dion’s story. And while a basic color scheme of white was chosen to best represent the Dominant’s character, accents of green and gold were added as nods to both his in-game war standard and his final transformation in the battle over the Crystalline Dominion respectively.

FRANCK MULLER was born in 1958 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, a city renowned for its watchmaking industry. Captivated by watches and their mechanisms, he developed a passion for horology from a young age and nurtured his talent. At the Geneva School of Horology, he completed the required coursework in just one year instead of the standard three, earning numerous awards, including the highest accolades. In 1983, he envisioned a groundbreaking concept: incorporating complex functions, previously exclusive to pocket watches, into wristwatches. Story of FINAL FANTASY XVI
FINAL FANTASY XVI introduces players to an all-new story in the FINAL FANTASY universe, an epic dark fantasy that takes place in the realms of Valisthea – a land blessed in the light of the Mothercrystals, and where peace falters as the spread of the Blight threatens to destroy their dominions. The fate of the land is decided by the Eikons, mighty summoned beasts and their Dominants, men and women who have been blessed with the ability to call upon and wield them. This is the tale of Clive Rosfield, a warrior granted the title “First Shield of Rosaria” and sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix, Eikon of Fire. Founded by FRANCK MULLER, the legendary watchmaker's eponymous brand is known the world round for combining technical craftsmanship with artistry to provide customers with what can only be called masterpieces—masterpieces crafted individually by hand, rather than mass produced.
When we first began work on this collaboration, I was slightly concerned about whether or not we would be able to realize each other's vision—especially since the request from FRANCK MULLER was simply that we let our imaginations run wild. My impression of the brand had always been one of strict policy and unwavering design standards, so naturally my assumption was that we would have to work within these restrictions. This couldn't have been further from the truth. What Mr. Muller instead presented us with was a challenge to ourselves—one both sobering and exciting.
